Dr. John Burroughs subspecializes in ophthalmic facial plastic surgery. Drooping of the upper eyelids (Blepharoptosis) is when the eyelid margin is too low. It can be complete wherein the eye is completely closed, but most patients have milder forms that cover portions of the pupil like seen in this patient. This can cause significant visual problems particularly with reading and peripheral vision while driving.

Ptosis can be from many causes. Most commonly it is an age-related issue wherein the eyelid tendon (levator) that opens the upper eyelid gets detached, thinned out, or effectively weakened. Rarely, patients can be born with a droopy eyelid. There are some more rare neurologic and muscle conditions that can also cause it.

One reason Dr. Burroughs became an eyelid plastic surgeon as he wanted to help people’s eye health/comfort and to see better, but he loves the artistry and benefit that is brought to his patient’s appearances as well. This patient was having trouble seeing and wanted to look less sleepy to everyone. She tested well to the “phenylephrine test,” so she opted for an internal approach that avoids any outside incision or scar. She has been delighted with her results, and felt that the surgery helped her see better and gave a more rested appearance. One can note in the photograph that her eyebrows are not as elevated giving her less of a “started” or “surprised” look. This is only about a 15 minute or so surgery when performed by an experienced surgeon. The success rate is 90% or higher. The results can be seen as soon as right after the surgery, but commonly a few weeks must pass to get to the final result and rarely reoperations are needed by another technique. If your tired of “tired looking” eyelids then call now for a consultation at 719-473-8801.
