Dr. John Burroughs is an oculofacial plastic surgeon, who practices in Colorado Springs.  This patient had been referred because of chronic red, ulcerated lesions had been forming on her eyelids despite eyelid hygiene and washing and topical antibiotic ointments.  Dr. Burroughs excised the areas, and you can see the second picture result.  The parents were delighted with her results.  Patient had intractable chalazia that had been unresponsive to conservative treatments.  Chalazia are benign lesions of the eyelids wherein the oil glands get blocked up and can’t drain properly.  They usually won’t get this severe.  In adults, chronic or recurrent chalazia in the same location or area can be a serious harbinger of an underlying malignancy.  Usually chalazia will respond to warm compresses and gentle massage.
