Dr. John Burroughs is an oculofacial plastic surgeon. His primary subspecialty is cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid and facial plastic surgery. Patients often seek consultations or are referred from other physicians to have their eyelids evaluated. This patient had excess skin of the upper eyelid on the right and blepharoptosis (lid margin droop) of the left upper eyelid. He was also bothered by visual problems because of these upper eyelid malpositions. The excess skin is removed by a procedure called an upper blepharoplasty. The ptosis is repaired by a different surgery wherein the tendon that opens the eye is repaired and/or tightened. This patient also had a procedure to stabilize his eyebrows as they will often drop downward is only upper eyelid surgery is done.

Dr. Burroughs has to often see patients that had undergone upper eyelid surgery by non-oculoplastic surgeons that resulted in their eyebrows being pulled downward because the brow tissues weren’t stabilized or raised with their eyelid surgery. This patient was very pleased with his results and felt he looked better in addition to the improvement in his vision. Most patients can do normal activities after their surgery within a few days, but should avoid heavy lifting or straining for about a week to 10 days. The sutures are removed at around 7 days. Most bruising and swelling is resolved within a few weeks. The surgery is not very painful, and many patients do no not require prescription pain medication. Dr. Burroughs receives consultations throughout Colorado and the surrounding states.
