Axillary hyperhidrosis affects millions. It can be embarrassing visually and cause unpleasant odor that can be very awkward in social settings and at work. Botulinum toxin has been used very effectively for this problem, but it requires repeat treatments usually at about 9-12 months and can be very costly over time and the injections can be uncomfortable in the axilla.
Dr. John Burroughs of Springs Aesthetics in Colorado Springs now offers Fractora for axillary hyperhidrosis. This technique uses targeted Radiofrequency heat delivered through small 24-tipped pins into the skin to destroy the offending sweat glands. It is done in the office setting with local anesthesia. Three “triple-stacked” passes are done over the entire armpit area where sweat glands exist, which is typically the hair bearing areas. Shown is a before and after cornstarch test of a patient that had fractora treatment for this problem. Shown on the right of the picture is the greatly reduced sweat production as evidenced by the lack of brown cornstarch staining.
Treatments take about 30-45 minutes, and results are typically immediate. Our first patient at a week out hasn’t used antiperspirant or deodorant since the treatment. This patient is an outdoor and exercise enthusiast and has been amazed with the results and the lack of axillary perspiration and smell since the treatment.
Treatments (see video) can feel warm and there is some local anesthesia injection discomfort that is quite tolerable. There is no downtime, but the area can take up to a week to fully heal and can itch just a bit. We recommend applying Vaseline to the area for the first few days. Pain medication post treatment is not required though a little soreness may be felt for a day or two. The results should continue to improve for up to 3 months and be permanent. If at 3 months there are still some areas of excess sweating then focused re-treatment can be done to these areas and is included at no additional cost at Springs Aesthetics with the initial fee.
