Bruising occurs in almost any eyelid surgery. This is because the eyelid skin is the thinnest in the body, but also amongst the most well vascularized. Dr. Burroughs recommends patients begin cold compresses immediately after surgery and avoid bending over or straining for 7-10 days. One of Dr. Burroughs patients developed a hematoma under her left eyelid incision when a day after surgery she started to bleed internally. This rarely can occur. Her incision was opened, the actively bleeding vessel was cauterized and a few sutures were repositioned.

Her before and after pictures including the severe swelling she had are shown. She had an outstanding result and had no vision injury, which can occur when eyelid incision bleed if severe pressure builds up and causes compression to the optic nerve to the eye. Most of the time bruising and swelling is mostly resolved by the 2-3rd week after surgery depending on how much surgery was done and if there had been much bleeding during surgery. Dr. Burroughs encourages patients to stop any unnecessary herbals or medications that can thin the blood and worsen bleeding, bruising. Fortunately, most all bruising no matter how dark or spread out almost always fully will clear without a trace over time.
