During the aging process, many people experience stretching of the eyelids and weakening of the muscles that support the eyelids, resulting in droopy eyes. In addition, fat can accumulate above and below the eyes, creating bags under the eyes and saggy eyebrows in addition to droopy eyelids. The final result makes individuals look tired, sick, and much older than their actual years. In addition, droopy eyelids can obscure peripheral vision, which can be a safety hazard. In severe cases, some individuals have trouble keeping their eyes open. Blepharoplasty is a simple, safe surgical procedure that corrects these issues.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is usually done as an outpatient procedure. Blepharoplasty can be combined with other procedures, such as a brow lift. Excess tissue and fat may be removed, and loose skin tightened up during this procedure. After spending a few hours in the recovery room, the patient can go home to rest and recover (someone else may need to drive the patient home).

Recovery

Full recovery usually takes ten to fourteen days. There may be swelling and bruising around the eyes, looking similar to a black eye, which can be alleviated with ice packs. Vision may be temporarily blurry and there may be some light sensitivity. Eye drops are usually prescribed that need to be applied once or twice a day. Strenuous activity will need to be avoided for a week, and contact lenses shouldn’t be worn for two weeks after blepharoplasty. Most people feel well enough to return to work and their regular activities after two or three days, although it might be wise to wear sunglasses to hide the bruising and swelling and to protect the skin from wind and sun until full healing has occurred.

Outcomes

Most patients are delighted with their outcomes after blepharoplasty. They look brighter, younger, energized, and more alert. Visual problems caused by droopy eyes will have been completely resolved. In addition to improving self-esteem, this procedure can provide a powerful boost to careers: many people who were previously overlooked for promotions and special projects because they “looked tired all the time” find their new energized look causes them to stand out at work.
