Dermaplaning is a superficial skin care treatment that exfoliates and removes dead skin cells and vellus hair (“peach fuzz”). Dermaplaning is not like shaving and is painless. The procedure is performed by a medical professional who uses a sterile Dermaplaning blade, or scalpel, placed at a 45-degree angle on the skin and is brushed back and forth over the facial skin. The blade is used on the clean, dry skin of the forehead, cheeks, chin, nose and neck. Removal of the vellus hair is beneficial as they trap oils and debris leading to a dull skin appearance.
One aging problem is that your body exfoliates less and less. This results in a buildup of dead skin cells requiring that you either remove those skin cells yourself or use a mechanical device to help remove the dead cells for you. Dermaplaning removes the excess skin stimulating new epidermal growth and creates more growth factors that boost collagen production for plumper skin. You can expect to see an instant improvement in skin texture and tone, while the long-term effects are increased cell turnover, reduction in fine lines and dark spots, acne scarring, and the removal of fine facial hair. Dermaplaning leaves the skin brighter, smoother, glowing, and more youthful.
Dermaplaning can be performed as a stand-alone procedure, however after dermaplaning, skin care products and treatments perform better since they can penetrate the skin easier making it a perfect complement to a series of treatments like our Chemical Peels, Dermalinfusion and Microneedling. Dermaplaning creates an opportunity for deeper product penetration, actually boosting the products effects, so it is often accompanied with a facial and special growth serums including vitamin A and C to work synergistically to address multiple problematic skin symptoms at once and to help maintain your results. When Dermaplaning is combined with glycolic or other chemical peel solutions better results may be achieved.
Dermaplaning is usually performed every 4 weeks. It is good to have the skin complete its normal rejuvenation cycle, which is thirty days, before going back and having the treatment done. The procedure generally removes between two to three weeks of dead skin from the facial area.
Dermaplaning is a quick (20-30 mins), painless, provides immediate results, and doesn’t require any anesthetic. There is no downtime and makeup can be applied directly after the procedure and will actually go on smoother. Skincare products will also be more effective, since the product can penetrate faster since it isn’t being blocked by dead skin cells.
Post-Dermaplaning skin is especially susceptible to the sun, so you will need to be very diligent about applying a good sunscreen. There is no need to worry about the hair on your face getting any darker. Since Dermaplaning only targets vellus hair, which will grow back the same size and color.
People who suffer from pustular acne or have excess oil should not have Dermaplaning performed because if the hair is removed from the area, the oils may cause bacteria growth which could lead to acne breakouts.
At Springs Aesthetics, Dermaplaning is performed only by trained individuals, and is very safe.
